So fortunate for me, I have been placed in a position where I have quite a few young ladies that reach out to me often for several things – whether it be just to talk, for advice or even a listening ear. So the other day I was on the phone with some one and she asked “how come you always end out calls with ‘always remember to be you’?”My response to her was simply because no one can ever beat you at being you. No one can do a better job at being you than you.
So it made me think about it. Growing up, we may have seen some things in people that we wanted or just simply people that we may have wanted to be like so we tell ourselves that we want to be like them. Not thinking that what may look awesome and amazing on the outside could have been difficult for them. But all while we are trying to perfect someone else’s attitude, demeanor and/or craft we tend to lose sight of who we are.
So because we can easily lose site of who we are trying to be like someone else, it’s important to sometimes have that bit of a reminder to simply say ‘BE YOU’.
Growing up, I found a million and five things wrong with who I was. I wanted long hair like this one, and a body frame like the next, I wanted to dress like her and sing like her. I wanted to worship in church like this one and dance like that one. But it wasn’t until I was 18 that I had to look in the mirror and embrace who I was. It didn’t happen over night but it happened. I learned to embrace the real me. I learned to love my hair for what it was then. I learned to love my face shape because I can wear any style I want. I began to love my body shape and to this day, I love every inch of my body. I love the way I dress, fashionable but not trendy. I might can not sing and I am ok with that.
So when I say Be You, its honest encouragement to embrace the real you on the inside. The best person you can be is you and no one can beat you at being you. So be young, be proud, be dope BE YOU!
